The Story of the Tournament

The Heathcotte versus Non-Heathcotte Spirit of Christmas Grudge Match Invitational Golf Tournament was conceived by Brock Heathcotte in the Fall of 2005 as a way to expand family recognition and glory.

Unfortunately for the “glory” part, family golf skills are not exceptional. Because some of Brock’s regular golfing partners are fairly accomplished, at least more so than he, it was necessary to devise a scoring method that would marginalize the best of the Non-Heathcotte golfers giving the Heathcotte side a fair chance for victory. Thus was born the Modified Stable-Fjord Method with Proportional Representation System. Despite the complicated scoring system, the first three tournaments have been great successes enjoyed by everyone who participated.

Team Heathcotte was victorious in the inaugural tournament played at Aguila Golf Club in 2005, mainly because Brock carded an 84, possibly his best round of the past five years.

The 2nd Annual HVNHSCGMIGT was played at Kokopelli Golf Club in 2006, and Team Non-Heathcotte took away the title. Bob Daquilante carded a new tournament record 82, and three other Non-Heathcotte team members scored 90, 91, and 93 en route to victory. For the first time a Grand Prize, a new putter graciously donated by Bob, was awarded to Mike Bailey for his individual performance. Team Heathcotte provided free golf shirts emblazoned with the tournament logo and slogan to all participants.

In 2007 the 3rd Annual tournament was played at Coldwater Golf Course in a light rain. Team Heathcotte rose to the occasion and took back the title. Brock, Brandon, and Joshua Heathcotte all contributed to a balanced attack to overcome the low round of the day—84 by Marc Sobelman. All players had tournament logo mulligan balls and tees.

The tournament is expected to continue in perpetuity, or at least until the principals lose interest, but, that is not expected to happen any time soon because of the enthusiastic response the tournament has received from participants. We hope you enjoy this historical and informational website. Any suggestions for improvement will be given the consideration they deserve.

TOURNAMENT RULES

The Official USGA Rules of Golf apply where not indicated otherwise.

You may clean and move your ball if it lies in casual water or mud.

No score greater than 9 should be recorded on any single hole. If it takes more than 9 strokes to get in, or you give up on a hole, record your score as 9.

If you cannot find your ball but it seemed like it should have been in play, drop a new ball at a playable location near where it seemed like it should have been, and count one stroke.

The only time you lose stroke AND distance is if you obviously hit a ball out of bounds. Thus, there is never any reason to go back to the tee box to hit another shot. The other players in the group should decide if the ball is obviously lost or not.

2008 TOURNAMENT

The 4th Annual tournament will be played on Saturday, December 6, 2008 at the Foothills Golf Club in Ahwatukee. This year’s slogan is “It was personal when personal wasn’t cool.”

New Non-Heathcotte team member Don Vogel obtained a smoking good deal of $49 per player with a free drink ticket for lunch afterwards. The first tee time will be at 7:30 am and four groups are expected.

Prizes have not yet been determined but it is anticipated that Team Heathcotte will once again fail to get the rewards it deserves.
